Thinking of vaccinating?
All of our puppies are vaccinated at 6 weeks old with Solo-jec 5 way. It is our recommendation that your puppy receive additional 5 way vaccines at 12 and 16 weeks old. At one year of age we recommend the use of Solo-jec 6 way. For the best protection, please repeat this yearly.
We recommend that any dogs that will be in the company of other dogs, either at a dog park, grooming studio, or boarding facility receive a Kennel Cough vaccine. Our dogs receive Solo-jec KC on a yearly basis.
The above can be done at your vets office. Shih Tzus are especially prone to reactions due to their small size and short noses. So please be aware of potential breathing issues in the first 24 hours after vaccination.
We do not recommend 1/2 dosages of vaccines. There are no studies supporting the efficacy of 1/2 doses for small sized dogs. Therefore we recommend full dosages of vaccines, with adequate spacing of at least 21 days for best immunity for your dog.
We do not recommend the usage of any vaccinations for Leptospira unless your dog has risk factors for this disease. Leptospira is primarily transmitted through water that has been used either as drinking or washing water by wildlife. Raccoons are the main transmitter. If your dog frequents areas where it could come in contact with contaminated water, please discuss this with your veterinarian. However, we personally feel that Leptospira vaccines are not well tolerated by Shih Tzus. This is best given by your veterinarian at their office. Most vaccines labeled 7 way, 9 way, or 10 way contain Leptospira.
Rabies Vaccinations are needed at 6 months and 18 months old. Thereafter they can be given every 3 years. These must be given by a licensed veterinarian.
